FIRE VR — ERP Type U & J

Train your healthcare facility staff in fire safety using virtual reality. Hospitals, clinics, nursing homes: your teams practice evacuation procedures and first response in an immersive hospital environment.

Context

Fire safety in healthcare facilities: a critical challenge

Healthcare facilities accommodate vulnerable patients whose evacuation requires specific procedures. The FIRE VR ERP Type U and J module prepares your staff to respond effectively to fire outbreaks.

Challenges specific to healthcare settings

  • Patients with reduced mobility: bedridden patients, those on IV drips, in wheelchairs, requiring evacuation assistance.
  • Medical gases: presence of oxygen, nitrous oxide and other medical gases representing an additional fire spread risk.
  • Critical equipment: resuscitation equipment, operating theatres, powered equipment that cannot be easily relocated.
  • Compartmentalization: healthcare facilities are organized into fire compartments enabling progressive horizontal evacuation.

Regulatory obligations

  • Staff training: all staff must be trained in fire safety and evacuation procedures specific to the facility.
  • Regular drills: evacuation drills must be conducted at least twice a year for staff and occupants.
  • Immediate safety measures: staff must be able to secure patients within minutes before emergency services arrive.
  • Safety register: every training session and drill must be recorded in the facility's safety register.

Features

A complete and realistic hospital environment

The ERP Type U and J module accurately reproduces the spaces, equipment and procedures specific to healthcare facilities.

Hospital corridors and patient rooms

The environment faithfully reproduces hospital corridors with their specific features: regulatory width, fire doors, care trolleys, medical equipment, evacuation signage and assembly points.

Alarm and smoke extraction systems

The trainee learns to use the fire safety systems specific to Type U and J public buildings: manual call points, general alarm, restricted alarm, compartmentalization, smoke extraction dampers and fire door closure.

Patient evacuation protocols

Training on specific horizontal and vertical patient evacuation procedures: horizontal transfer to a secure compartment, evacuation of persons with reduced mobility, management of patients under medical assistance.

Fire door management

The trainee practices manual and automatic fire door closure, verifies their proper functioning, and implements compartmentalization to limit the spread of fire and smoke.

Scenarios

Realistic scenarios tailored to healthcare settings

Patient room

Fire in a patient room

Fire outbreak in a patient room. The trainee must secure the patient, close the door, raise the alarm and intervene with the appropriate extinguisher.

Corridor

Corridor fire

Fire outbreak in a service corridor. Smoke extraction management, fire door closure and horizontal transfer of patients to a secure compartment.

Technical room

Electrical fire

Short circuit in a technical room. Power supply cut-off, appropriate extinguishing agent selection, and emergency services alert.

Evacuation

Horizontal evacuation

Organizing the transfer of patients from an affected compartment to a safe compartment. Prioritization based on patient autonomy levels.

Alarm

Restricted alarm management

Restricted alarm procedure before triggering the general alarm. Coordination with the security control room and care teams.

Night

Night shift scenario

Fire outbreak during a reduced night shift. The trainee must manage the situation with minimal staffing and prioritize actions while awaiting reinforcements.

Frequently asked questions

Everything you need to know about ERP Type U & J VR

What is a Type U and J public building (ERP)?

Type U ERPs (public access buildings) designate healthcare facilities: hospitals, clinics, and care centers. Type J ERPs designate residential facilities for elderly or disabled persons: nursing homes, retirement homes, and care homes. These establishments have specific regulatory obligations regarding fire safety, particularly due to the presence of persons with reduced mobility or dependents.

Why is specific fire training needed for Type U and J ERPs?

Healthcare facilities present unique risks and constraints: bedridden patients or those under medical assistance, presence of oxygen and medical gases, sensitive electrical equipment, and the need for horizontal evacuation before vertical evacuation. Staff must master specific procedures that are not covered by standard fire training.

Does the module cover horizontal evacuation procedures?

Yes, horizontal evacuation (transferring patients to a secure compartment on the same level) is at the core of the ERP Type U and J module. The trainee practices organizing patient transfers based on their level of autonomy, using evacuation assistance equipment, and coordinating actions with other team members.

Is the training compliant with Type U and J ERP regulatory requirements?

The EPI ERP Type U and J module was designed in collaboration with hospital fire safety professionals and firefighters. The scenarios comply with current regulatory procedures and are regularly updated to incorporate regulatory changes. VR training complements the mandatory evacuation drills.
